MOSS Project
Starting our journey to decarbonise the energy sector
The MOSS project (MOlten Salts Storage) brings a strong consortium of partners together to build the first Hyme energy storage facility.
In collaboration with a consortium of partners from Denmark and Europe, Hyme will build the first molten hydroxide energy storage plant in the world. This plant, located in Semco Maritime’s facilities in Esbjerg, will be able to test and prove:
Scalability: Our storage solution can be built with components already available on the market.
Technological development: From the lab to Esbjerg, our patented solution can work in a real setting.
The project is funded by the Danish Energy Agency’s EUDP program
Salt storage tanks
A hot and a cold tank with molten salt.
Heat exchanger
Used for steam generation extracting heat from our system. (Discharging)
Electrical heaters
The electrical heaters are used to inject energy into the system. (Charging)
Pumps
The pumps move the salt around the system.
Plant design
The purpose of the plant is to display and test our molten hydroxide storage in a practical setting. The plant will be tested to prove our component integration, validate our system design, gain insights into the most optimal materials and components, and demonstrate operation and system control.
When charging, the cold salt is pumped through the electrical heaters to the hot salt tank. During discharge, the hot salt is pumped through the heat exchanger to generate steam, then transferred back to the cold tank.
Project timeline
We are following an ambitious timeline to be fully operational and able to demonstrate our plant in 2024.
